Our mission is to reduce wildfire risk to life and property in the Santa Monica Mountains — through deterrence, early detection, and a sustained volunteer presence.

Who We Are

Arson Watch is a volunteer unit of the LA County Sheriff's Department, operating under the guidance of the Lost Hills Sheriff's Station. Two community teams — Malibu and Topanga — are each led by Team Leaders who coordinate patrols, training, and agency relationships. All volunteers pass local and federal background checks.

The program is funded by FAWDS — Friends of the Community Arson Watch and Disaster Services, Inc. — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

What we do

Volunteers patrol the entire Santa Monica Mountains Recreational area (SMMR) during Red Flag conditions and other high-risk periods.

We deter risky behavior, identify hazards early, support fire safety education, and assist during high-risk community events like July 4th.

We are more than 175 residents strong — and growing.
