Help Protect the Community You Call Home — Join Us
Is This For You?
If you live within the Lost Hills Sheriff's Station (LHSS) area — including Malibu, Topanga, Calabasas, Agoura Hills, Chatsworth, and surrounding communities — and want to make a tangible contribution to your community's safety, we want to hear from you.
The minimum commitment is 30 hours per year — averaging under three hours a month. Hours are earned through patrols, community events, team meetings, and trainings. Most patrols take place during afternoon and evening Red Flag conditions and the July 4th holiday period.
The Application Process
Once you submit your interest, a team member will contact you for a brief screening phone interview before sending the LASD Volunteer Services application. This can be completed digitally, but must be thoroughly completed and signed to authorize the background checks.
The Lost Hills Sheriff's Station performs local background checks. After a preliminary LASD clearance, you will be advised to schedule Livescan digital fingerprinting at LHSS. Federal background checks are executed and then LASD Volunteer Services Division performs a review of all materials and makes a decision.
The full process typically takes 6–12 months. Patience is part of the commitment. We'll check with LHSS through the process and do our best to keep things moving, but the timeline is determined by law enforcement scheduling and resources.
Once cleared, you'll receive resources: a Volunteer Guide, one-on-one patrol training, your radio, identifying clothing, and your temporary LASD Volunteer ID. Continuing education is provided.
After one year of service and completion of the first 30 hours, you will be eligible for your official LASD Volunteer Services ID.
